How to Find Legitimate Remote Jobs (and Avoid Scams)
Aug 14 · MyRemoteJobs Team
Remote job scams follow a recognizable pattern, and once you've seen it once you can spot it fast. Being cautious doesn't mean missing out on real opportunities -- it means knowing which signals actually matter.
Common red flags
- You're offered the job with no real interview, sometimes within hours of applying.
- The employer asks you to buy your own equipment and pay them back, or to deposit and forward a check.
- Communication happens only over chat apps like Telegram or WhatsApp, never a company email domain.
- The job description is vague about what the company actually does.
- You're asked for banking details or a copy of your ID before any formal offer.
How to verify a listing is real
Look the company up independently -- a real website, real employees on LinkedIn, ideally reviews on a site like Glassdoor. Search the exact job title and company name plus the word "scam" before applying if anything feels off. A legitimate employer will never ask you to pay them, send them gift cards, or deposit a check on their behalf -- no exceptions.
