Overview
AfterQuery builds evaluation datasets for frontier AI labs to measure and improve their models. This contract role involves authoring realistic data science problems drawn from practical work—experiments, metrics, forecasting, and predictive modeling—and solving them to a reference answer that demonstrates sound analytical reasoning.
What You’ll Do
- Author realistic data science problems drawn from your own work: experiments, metrics, forecasting, segmentation and predictive modeling
- Work each problem through to a reference answer, with the reasoning behind every step
- Catch the analysis mistakes that look reasonable but only a practitioner would spot
Requirements
- Master's or PhD in statistics, computer science, economics, mathematics or another quantitative field
- 3+ years full time as a data scientist (internships and school don't count)
- Strong SQL and Python or R
- Hands-on statistics: A/B testing, regression, causal inference or predictive modeling
- Able to commit at least 10 hours per week
Who Should Apply
This suits experienced data scientists who've shipped models and designed experiments in real product environments, and who find writing about their work satisfying. It will frustrate someone looking for a team to join or mentorship in how to approach problems; this is solo, judgment-focused work where you're the expert.
Salary Insight
$115/hour is well above typical consulting rates for data science work and reflects that AfterQuery values practitioners who can spot subtle errors and articulate their reasoning. As a contractor role with minimum 10 hours/week commitment, that's a floor of ~$5,980/month if you work only the minimum; most will work more flexibly around other commitments.

Application Tip
Lead with a specific analysis problem you've solved end-to-end—an experiment you designed, a model you built, or a causal inference challenge—and emphasize the mistakes you caught along the way. AfterQuery's core need is someone who can explain *why* a plausible-looking approach is wrong, not just that it is. Your cover note should show you've read their mission and can write clearly about technical reasoning; this team will see your application as a writing sample.
