Overview

Mercor partners with AI labs and enterprises to improve frontier models. This role audits AI-generated editorial and media work product in your field, evaluating whether the output is realistic, accurate in domain content and standards, and correctly graded by automated systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Review complete AI attempts at realistic editorial or media tasks, including the task prompt, AI output, and automated grading
  • Assess whether tasks are realistic to the field and whether domain content, standards, figures and regulations are accurate
  • Evaluate whether automated grading holds up against actual practitioner judgment
  • Write short reasoned judgments for each assessment
  • Typically one hour per item

Requirements

  • 4+ years professional experience as an editor (responsible for published copy), reporter/journalist (sourcing your own stories), or film/video editor (cutting finished pieces)
  • Experience with editorial chains, fact-checking, and killing or flagging problematic work before publication
  • Near-native business English
  • Comfort with spreadsheets or PDFs to verify numerical reconciliation
  • Valid work authorization in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, or United States

Who Should Apply

This suits experienced editors, journalists, and video professionals who have killed or flagged problematic work before it published—people who know their field well enough to spot what's subtly wrong. It will frustrate generalists, content marketers who edit only their own work, or anyone uncomfortable making judgment calls and writing brief justifications. The role requires you to be both detail-oriented and confident enough to disagree with an automated grader.

Salary Insight

$45–$50 per hour is the stated range. For editorial contract review work with minimal ramp-up, this is competitive but not premium; it signals a specialized, part-time or flexible gig rather than full employment. Research what similar AI training contractors and freelance editors with your experience level earn in your region. Raise rate expectations during negotiation if you have 7+ years in your field or a notable byline, but do so before you accept the first project.

Application Tip

Lead with a specific example: a story you killed for sourcing problems, a piece you sent back to a writer with a factual flag, or a legal issue you caught before publication. This role is buying judgment, not just technical skill, so show you've actually exercised it. Mention which of the three specialisms (editor, journalist, or video editor) is yours—the posting explicitly differentiates them, and claiming overlap without clear credentials will weaken your application.
