Mercor

Verified listing
Contract
United StatesPosted 5d ago$70–$110 per hour

Overview

Mercor is hiring experienced private detectives and investigators to evaluate and improve AI systems by assessing AI-generated investigative content, workflows, and reports. You'll apply your real-world expertise in fact-gathering, analysis, and reporting to review AI outputs for quality, accuracy, and legal compliance.

What You’ll Do

  • Evaluate AI-generated investigation plans, background research summaries, surveillance reports, and other investigative artifacts for quality and accuracy
  • Compare AI-generated responses head-to-head based on investigative rigor, legal and ethical compliance, and soundness of conclusions
  • Review investigative scenarios involving evidence gathering, source verification, records research, and case reporting and provide expert feedback

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience as a Private Investigator, Private Detective, Licensed Investigator, Fraud Investigator, Insurance Investigator, or closely related investigative role
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, and compiling information on legal, financial, or personal matters including background checks, surveillance, interviews, and records research
  • Ability to commit 20+ hours per week
  • Strong written English communication skills

Who Should Apply

This suits experienced investigators who are comfortable making independent quality judgments and explaining their reasoning clearly in writing. You'll thrive if you're detail-oriented, intellectually curious about how AI handles investigative work, and able to work asynchronously without extensive hand-holding. It will frustrate you if you prefer long-term stability, need real-time interaction and feedback loops, or if you're early in your investigative career and still building foundational skills.

Salary Insight

The rate reflects the specialized expertise being purchased: seasoned investigators with years of real-world experience validating AI outputs. The wide range ($40/hour spread) suggests it may vary by level of expertise, location, or performance. Note that initial payment is task-based rather than hourly — you'll be paid per completed task upon approval, then move to hourly rates after your first task completes on time.

Application Tip

Lead with a specific case or investigation type you've owned — not just "conducted background checks" but something like "ran 200+ background investigations for a law firm, flagging red flags on financial discrepancies and uncovering hidden liens." The work here depends entirely on your judgment as the expert; hiring managers will want to see that you've thought critically about investigative methodology before you assess whether an AI system did it well. A brief example of a judgment call you made under ambiguity will carry more weight than credentials alone.
