How to Explain Employment Gaps in a Remote Job Application

Jul 3 · MyRemoteJobs Team

Employment gaps come up in almost every hiring conversation now, and most experienced hiring managers have stopped treating them as automatic red flags. What they're actually evaluating is how clearly and honestly you talk about the gap, not whether one exists.

How to frame it

State the reason plainly and briefly -- caregiving, layoff, health, a return to school, a deliberate break -- without over-explaining or apologizing at length. One or two sentences is usually enough. Then pivot quickly to what you did during that time or what you're ready for now.

If you did anything during the gap

  • Freelance work, courses, volunteering, or self-directed projects are all worth a brief mention.
  • If you genuinely did nothing career-related, that's fine too -- don't manufacture activity. A confident, brief explanation reads better than a stretched one.

Resume-wise, list the gap honestly by year or month rather than trying to hide it with vague date ranges -- attempts to obscure a gap are usually more noticeable, and more concerning to a hiring manager, than the gap itself.
