How to Negotiate Salary for a Remote Position
Negotiating salary for a remote role works mostly like any other negotiation, with one added wrinkle: many companies pay based on where you live, not just the role itself. Knowing that going in changes how you frame your ask.
Before you negotiate
- Ask directly whether the company uses location-based pay bands. It's a normal question, not a red flag to ask it.
- Research the range for the role using multiple sources, not just one salary site.
- Know your own minimum before the conversation starts, separate from what you'll open with.
During the conversation
Let them name a number first when possible. If you need to name one, give a range, not a single figure, and anchor it slightly above your real target. Justify it with specifics -- relevant experience, a skill the role explicitly needs, results from past work -- rather than general effort or need.
If the base salary has a firm ceiling, ask about other levers: a signing bonus, extra PTO, professional development budget, or an earlier compensation review. Remote roles often have more flexibility on these than on the base number itself.
