How to Prepare for a Video Interview (Technical and Practical Tips)
Jun 27 · MyRemoteJobs Team
Most video interview mishaps aren't about what you say -- they're avoidable technical or environmental issues that distract from it. A few minutes of setup beforehand prevents almost all of them.
Technical checklist
- Test the specific video platform they're using, not just your general webcam setup -- links and permissions can behave differently per platform.
- Close other apps and browser tabs that might trigger notifications or slow your connection.
- Have a backup way to join (phone app, alternate device) in case your primary setup fails.
- Position your camera at eye level, not looking down at you from above.
Practical checklist
- Let anyone else in your space know the exact time so you're not interrupted.
- Silence your phone and any other devices that might chime during the call.
- Keep a glass of water nearby, and have your resume and notes visible but not distracting.
None of this replaces preparing your actual answers, but a smooth technical setup means your preparation is what actually comes through, instead of getting overshadowed by a frozen screen or a barking dog.
