Red Flags to Watch for When Evaluating a Remote Job Offer
Jun 24 · MyRemoteJobs Team
Getting an offer feels like the finish line, but it's also your last real chance to evaluate the company before you're committed. A few warning signs are worth slowing down for, even when you're excited about the role.
Signs worth pausing on
- Vague or evasive answers when you ask about team structure, who you'd report to, or how success is measured.
- Pressure to sign quickly with little time to consider, especially paired with a "this offer expires in 24 hours" framing.
- No clarity on equipment, stipends, or how expenses like internet or coworking space are handled.
- A written offer that doesn't match what was discussed verbally -- always compare the two carefully.
- Reluctance to connect you with a current employee for questions, if you ask.
What's normal to ask about
It's completely reasonable to ask about turnover on the team, how often the company has reorganized recently, and what a typical week actually looks like. A healthy company will answer these directly. Hesitation or deflection on straightforward questions is itself useful information.
