How to Tailor Your Resume for Each Job Application

Jul 21 · MyRemoteJobs Team

Tailoring every resume from scratch doesn't scale, but sending one identical resume everywhere leaves an easy win on the table. The efficient middle ground is a strong base resume plus a short, deliberate pass per application.

What to actually change

  • Reorder your bullet points so the most relevant ones to this specific role are near the top of each section.
  • Swap in language from the job posting where it genuinely matches your experience -- exact phrasing helps both ATS matching and human skimming.
  • Trim or cut experience that's irrelevant to this particular role, even if it's impressive in general.

What not to bother changing

Your overall structure, formatting, and core work history shouldn't need to change per application -- if they do, your base resume needs work, not each individual tailoring pass. Aim for changes you can make in 10-15 minutes per application, not a rewrite each time.
