How to Answer "Why Do You Want to Work Remotely?"

Aug 8 · MyRemoteJobs Team

"Why do you want to work remotely?" sounds like small talk, but it's actually screening for a specific risk: someone who wants the lifestyle but hasn't thought about what the job requires in return.

The weak answer

"I like the flexibility and not having a commute" is true for almost everyone and tells the interviewer nothing about how you'll actually perform. It centers what you get, not what you bring.

A stronger approach

Talk about how you work best: maybe you do your most focused work in a quiet space you control, or you've found you communicate more clearly in writing than in a busy open office. Pair that with a real example -- a project you delivered independently, a time you proactively flagged a delay instead of waiting to be asked.

The goal isn't to prove you love remote work. It's to show the interviewer you understand what it demands -- self-direction, proactive communication, and comfort with ambiguity -- and that you already operate that way.
