Overview

micro1 is engaging Medical Coders to contribute their expertise to a dynamic project for a valued customer. In this role, you'll apply your outpatient coding expertise to help train next-generation AI systems by annotating and reviewing outpatient medical records and applying accurate ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS coding.

What You’ll Do

  • Annotate and review outpatient medical records ensuring accurate assignment of ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes based on documentation
  • Apply Evaluation & Management (E&M) leveling to outpatient visits using official guidelines to validate and enrich datasets
  • Apply outpatient-specific coding conventions including diagnosis coding guidelines, modifier usage, medical necessity, and linking diagnoses to procedures
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders via written and verbal communication to clarify requirements and resolve ambiguities in clinical documentation
  • Provide high-quality feedback on coding guidelines and edge cases to improve project workflows and model understanding

Requirements

  • Active AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification
  • Comprehensive understanding of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding systems and outpatient E&M leveling guidelines
  • Hands-on experience coding in outpatient settings (physician office, clinic, ambulatory surgery center, outpatient hospital departments)
  • Experience with diverse clinical documentation types (office visit notes, procedure notes, operative reports)
  • Proficiency with written and verbal communication with strong attention to detail
  • Access to up-to-date official ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding books and E&M guidelines

Who Should Apply

This role suits certified medical coders with solid outpatient experience who are comfortable with detail-oriented work and clear written communication. It's genuinely well-matched if you've coded in primary care, urgent care, or ASC settings and enjoy the precision of mapping clinical notes to codes. It will frustrate you if you prefer faster-paced work, prefer clinical roles over documentation, or find the prospect of training AI systems demotivating rather than interesting.

Salary Insight

The $20–$32/hr range for medical coders with AAPC certification is moderate for remote contract work; AAPC credentials typically command higher rates in traditional healthcare settings. The wide band likely reflects experience levels and speed. Clarify during negotiation where your speed and accuracy would place you within the band, and whether there are productivity bonuses.

Application Tip

Lead with a specific example of a tricky outpatient coding scenario you've resolved—a modifier-heavy claim, an ambiguous E&M level, or a medical necessity challenge you worked through. This team is building training data for AI, so they're looking for someone who doesn't just apply rules mechanically but thinks critically about edge cases and can articulate why a code path was chosen. A cover note showing you understand the AI training mission (and aren't just looking for any coding job) will differentiate you.
