Overview

micro1 is engaging Security Onion Specialists to contribute to a dynamic customer project focused on advancing security operations and threat detection capabilities. You'll apply your cybersecurity expertise to help train AI systems by providing high-quality, real-world input through hands-on Security Onion workflows, screen recordings, and detailed documentation.

What You’ll Do

  • Complete assigned workflows and tasks within Security Onion using practical cybersecurity experience
  • Navigate Security Onion features related to network monitoring, alert investigation, log analysis, threat detection, and incident response
  • Analyze security alerts, network traffic, logs, and other relevant security data within Security Onion
  • Record screen while completing assigned workflows and clearly demonstrate the steps taken
  • Create realistic prompts and detailed rubrics based on completed workflows
  • Document workflow steps and clearly explain the tools, features, and investigation techniques used
  • Review and evaluate task outputs for accuracy and alignment with project guidelines
  • Follow project instructions and quality standards while working independently in a remote environment

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on experience using Security Onion for security monitoring, threat detection, or incident investigation
  • Prior Human Data experience such as data annotation, labeling, RLHF, AI response evaluation, or model evaluation
  • Current access to Security Onion and ability to use the application independently
  • Comfortable recording and sharing your screen while completing workflows
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to clearly explain technical workflows

Who Should Apply

This role suits experienced hands-on security professionals — network defenders, incident responders, or SOC analysts — who know Security Onion well enough to operate it independently and can articulate *why* they're doing things, not just that they can do them. This work frustrates people who want deep technical variety or who find detailed documentation and screen recording tedious; you'll be repeating similar workflows with meticulous documentation as your primary output.

Salary Insight

The hourly range of $90–$175 is notably wide, suggesting variance by experience level and whether you're contracting as an individual or through an agency. Your specific rate will likely depend on your demonstrated Security Onion proficiency and any prior human-data or AI-training work. Clarify your rate expectation early; if a rate isn't proposed, start the conversation with your hourly target or ask what the band reflects.

Application Tip

Lead with specific Security Onion investigations you've completed — a real alert you've triaged, a log analysis workflow, an incident you've worked through — rather than a list of tools. The client is training an AI on your decision-making process, so show you can explain your reasoning clearly in writing or (ideally) reference prior work where you've already documented technical steps. If you have prior AI-training or data-labeling work, front-load it; it's not required but it signals you understand what "quality data for AI" means.
