Overview
Mercor partners with leading AI labs to train frontier AI models using human expertise. This role involves evaluating and validating AI-generated answers in atomistic simulations and computational materials science, reviewing DFT calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, and materials property predictions.
What You’ll Do
- Evaluate advanced scientific problems involving atomistic simulations and computational materials science
- Review and validate AI-generated answers involving DFT calculations, molecular dynamics, and materials property predictions
- Assess the appropriateness of computational methods, simulation parameters, convergence criteria, and physical assumptions
- Analyse atomic structures, electronic properties, reaction energetics, diffusion mechanisms, and materials stability
- Evaluate surface and interface phenomena, adsorption energies, defect formation, and chemical reaction pathways
- Develop high-quality reference solutions, evaluation rubrics, and technically rigorous scientific explanations
- Identify computational inaccuracies, methodological limitations, and errors in scientific reasoning
- Apply computational expertise to improve AI performance on complex materials science problems
Requirements
- PhD in Computational Materials Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Computational Chemistry, Condensed Matter Physics, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with at least one of: Density Functional Theory (DFT), Ab initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD), Classical Molecular Dynamics (MD), Monte Carlo simulations, or atomistic/first-principles materials modelling
- Proficiency with computational tools such as VASP, Quantum ESPRESSO, CP2K, GPAW, LAMMPS, or similar software
- Strong understanding of electronic structure, interatomic interactions, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and materials properties
- Experience interpreting simulation results and validating computational predictions
- Strong Python skills for scientific computing, data analysis, or workflow automation
Who Should Apply
This role suits PhD-level computational materials scientists or chemists with hands-on experience running atomistic simulations who want flexible, project-based work evaluating AI on their core expertise. It will frustrate people who prefer deep, long-term engagement with a single codebase or team, or those who find the intellectual work of validation and error-checking tedious compared to novel research.
Salary Insight
$84/hour for contract work in computational materials science signals competitive compensation for specialized expertise, though your effective hourly rate depends entirely on project consistency—with a minimum 10 hours per week guaranteed, you'll have predictable income, but the maximum 40-hour ceiling means this works best as a supplement to other work rather than a sole income. Research Mercor's track record on payment reliability and contract renewal before committing.

Application Tip
Lead with a specific system you've modeled end-to-end—name the software stack (VASP, LAMMPS, etc.), the materials problem, and a tricky validation step you caught or solved. Mercor is hiring for someone who can spot subtle errors in computational reasoning without needing to ask questions, so demonstrate that you've debugged methodological choices, not just run standard workflows. If you have publications, link them; if not, a short note on a convergence issue you diagnosed or an unexpected result you rationalized will be stronger than reciting your tools list.
