Overview
Mercor is partnering with an AI research organization to understand how people build with AI coding assistants. Participants record their normal work sessions using OpenCode, a terminal-based coding assistant, with open-weight and Gemini models available to choose from.
What You’ll Do
- Build or improve your own real project using provided open-weight and Gemini models
- Choose which model to use for each task and switch as needed
- Use one chat per task
- Record coding sessions while doing normal work
Requirements
- Actively building a real project (side project, startup, app, or LLM-powered feature)
- Experience using AI tools to build (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Cline, Replit, or Lovable)
- Comfortable following terminal setup steps on Mac or Linux
- Professional coding experience welcome but not required
Who Should Apply
This suits builders with real projects already underway who are comfortable working in unfamiliar tooling and having their sessions studied. It works well for side-project developers, AI-first engineers, and even non-traditional coders already using AI assistants—especially those who enjoy contributing to research. It will frustrate anyone who needs predictable income, prefers privacy, or works primarily on Windows/closed environments.
Salary Insight
$500 per session for roughly 50 turns of work (2–3 hours active), equating to approximately $167–250 per hour. This is task-based compensation, so earnings depend on session acceptance and completion rate. Mercor likely screens sessions for data quality, so not all attempts may be paid.

Application Tip
Emphasize the specificity and maturity of your current project—link to a GitHub repo, deployed app, or clear description of what you're actively building. Mercor is funding research, not hiring; they need signal that you'll do genuine work, not toy code. Mention which AI tools you already use daily and any non-standard setup (M1 Mac, WSL, etc.) to show you can handle terminal environments. A one-line summary of your project is worth more than a list of languages.
