Overview
micro1 is hiring competitive data scientists to design evaluation tasks and datasets. You'll create reproducible machine learning challenges that test genuine problem-solving ability, drawing on experience from Kaggle, DrivenData, and similar platforms.
What You’ll Do
- Build reproducible environments and prepare data with correct dependencies
- Implement reference solutions and develop reliable evaluation criteria
- Run coding agents against tasks and refine based on failures
- Identify implementation errors, data leakage, and flawed assumptions
- Document task requirements, solution reasoning, and verification steps
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in data science or ML competitions (Kaggle, DrivenData, etc.)
- Strong problem-solving ability and understanding of your methods
- Practical programming ability to implement and verify solutions
- Strong Python coding experience with testing and debugging
Who Should Apply
Apply if you've placed in or seriously pursued data science competitions and enjoy the methodical work of building reproducible systems. This suits someone who thinks in terms of metrics, edge cases, and verification—not someone who wants rapid iteration on novel problems or direct stakeholder interaction.
Salary Insight
$60–$120/hr is a wide band typical for contract work spanning experience levels and task complexity. At ~15 hours/week this could be $3,900–$7,800/month if you're at the high end consistently, but confirm your likely rate with micro1 upfront—these platforms often place newcomers at the lower end.

Application Tip
Lead with a specific competition result or dataset you've built—link to your Kaggle profile, a notebook, or a challenge you've designed. This role is about rigor and reproducibility, so a portfolio showing you can set up clean environments and catch edge cases will land harder than a long resume. Mention any experience testing ML solutions or catching bugs in other people's code.
