Overview

micro1 is hiring contract design experts to review and critique graphic and editorial design work. You'll evaluate layouts, typography, color, and production readiness, then write clear explanations of your judgments for briefs across print, web, and publications.

What You’ll Do

  • Review graphic and editorial designs (posters, covers, page layouts, brand pieces) and judge which solution best fits the brief and audience
  • Evaluate hierarchy, spacing, type choices, color use, and how text and images work together
  • Flag production issues such as incorrect formats, resolution problems, margins, and print color concerns
  • Verify designs align with briefs and brand or publication style guidelines
  • Write clear written explanations for each decision so reviewers can follow your reasoning

Requirements

  • Professional work experience as a graphic designer, editorial designer, layout designer, publication designer, art director or brand designer
  • Daily use of professional design tools such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop or Figma
  • Experience with real client or publisher jobs including briefs, revisions, production files and final delivery
  • Ability to articulate design decisions and explain why one solution works better than another
  • Clear written English

Who Should Apply

Apply if you're an experienced graphic or editorial designer who has shipped real work to clients or publishers and can confidently explain design decisions. This role suits someone who enjoys critique, has a trained eye for typography and layout, and finds satisfaction in mentoring through feedback. It will frustrate pure technicians who prefer execution over judgment, or designers who haven't worked directly with briefs and production realities.

Salary Insight

The $55–$100/hr range is wide, reflecting the band from junior to senior designers; your rate will track your experience and demonstrated judgment. The posted range ($50–$105/hr) shows micro1's full hiring band. Contract rates at this level are typically 20–40% higher than salaried equivalents to offset lack of benefits; benchmark this against design freelance rates in your region and negotiate based on your portfolio strength.

Application Tip

Your portfolio should lead with 3–4 examples where you made a judgment call on design—not just the work you created, but a case where you chose one direction over another and can explain why. Since this role is about critique and articulation, micro1 will weight how clearly you write and reason. In your profile, pick one brief-to-delivery project and walk through a design decision: what the constraint was, what you considered, and what you chose. That specificity will stand out far more than a general list of skills.
