Overview

micro1 is hiring photo and visual editors to review, select, and edit images for publication and client work. The role involves judging image quality, correcting technical problems, marking alterations, and writing explanations for editorial decisions.

What You’ll Do

  • Review and select the strongest images from sets for given purposes
  • Judge technical quality including exposure, focus, color, noise and cropping
  • Mark images that have been altered in ways that change their meaning
  • Verify captions and descriptions match image content
  • Write short explanations for each decision
  • Correct or retouch images following provided briefs

Requirements

  • Professional experience as a photo editor, picture editor, visual editor, retoucher or photo producer
  • Daily proficiency with professional tools such as Lightroom, Photoshop or Capture One
  • Experience delivering images to real audiences (print, web, social, broadcast or brand work)
  • Ability to articulate why one image works and another doesn't
  • Clear written English

Who Should Apply

This role suits someone with professional photo editing or curation experience who can make confident, defensible decisions about images and explain their reasoning clearly. It will frustrate detail-oriented perfectionists who struggle with subjective judgement calls, or editors whose experience is entirely technical rather than editorial — you need to know when an image "works" not just how to fix it technically.

Salary Insight

The range of $50–$105/hr is wide, reflecting the contractor model and likely variation by experience level, timezone, and availability. At the higher end this is competitive for senior photo editors and retouchers; at the lower end it reflects less specialized work. Ask early what factors determine placement within the range and how availability (hours per week) affects the rate offered.

Application Tip

The posting emphasizes that you won't be judged on your portfolio of finished work — instead, the editing interview is designed to test your live judgment and reasoning. Prepare to talk through a recent project where you chose between images or had to explain why a technical fix mattered (or didn't). Focus on decisions and trade-offs, not tools. They want to hear how you think, not what you've made.
