Overview

micro1 is hiring remote contractors to review and evaluate photography and cinematography work. This role involves assessing photo and video submissions against client briefs, judging technical quality and composition, and documenting your decisions in writing.

What You’ll Do

  • Review photo and video work against client briefs
  • Judge technical quality including exposure, focus, color, framing, and lens choice
  • Identify technical problems such as noise, flicker, clipped highlights, or incorrect frame rates
  • Assess whether work fits the brief and intended use (print, web, social, broadcast, film)
  • Write short explanations for each decision to document reasoning

Requirements

  • Professional experience shooting photos or video for clients, productions, publications or brands
  • Experience as photographer, cinematographer, director of photography, or camera operator
  • Real-world job experience with briefs, shoot days, post-production and client delivery
  • Daily use of professional cameras and editing or grading tools such as Lightroom, Photoshop, DaVinci Resolve or Premiere
  • Clear written English
  • Ability to articulate technical and compositional decisions

Who Should Apply

This suits working photographers, cinematographers, or camera operators with hands-on experience judging their own work and others' in real production settings. You'll thrive if you can articulate the "why" behind technical choices and enjoy mentoring through feedback. It will frustrate someone who hasn't shot professionally or prefers executing work over analyzing it — this is pure evaluation, not creation.

Salary Insight

The $50–$105/hr range is wide because it spans both senior professionals and those earlier in their career, and likely varies by region and availability. For remote contract work in creative fields, this is mid-market; research what established local cinematographers charge in your region before negotiating, and note that contractor rates don't include benefits or predictable hours.

Application Tip

Lead your application with a specific project where you made critical decisions on set or in post — a brief where you had to choose between multiple takes, or a technical problem you caught before delivery. The hiring team wants to see that you've lived through the stakes of production and can spot issues under pressure. Your portfolio matters less than evidence that you've worked with clients directly and can explain your judgment clearly.
