Overview
micro1 is building AI systems for scientific domains. This role involves using your PhD-level chemistry expertise to evaluate, design, and critique chemistry problems and workflows to help train AI models, shaping how they learn to reason about molecular systems and reactions.
What You’ll Do
- Design, evaluate, and critique chemistry and computational chemistry problems, workflows, and reasoning chains to support AI benchmarking initiatives
- Provide expert-level insights on reaction mechanisms, synthesis planning, spectroscopy analysis, molecular simulations, and electronic structure methods
- Assess and optimize experimental protocols, simulation parameters, and software configurations for accuracy and reproducibility
- Analyze chemical, spectroscopic, and simulation data and provide actionable recommendations
- Leverage domain knowledge to guide the development and validation of chemistry-related AI models and tools
- Communicate complex scientific concepts clearly, both in writing and verbally, to technical and non-technical collaborators
- Document findings, methodologies, and best practices to ensure knowledge transfer
Requirements
- PhD in chemistry, computational chemistry, chemical biology, materials science, or closely related field
- Hands-on research lab experience, including wet lab experience for experimental subfields, or extensive simulation-heavy research for computational subfields
- Deep expertise in at least one of: organic synthesis, inorganic chemistry, physical/theoretical chemistry, analytical chemistry, computational chemistry, cheminformatics, or materials science
- Professional written and spoken English (C1 or higher)
- Proficiency in Python and/or industry-standard tools (Gaussian, ORCA, Psi4, GROMACS, LAMMPS, RDKit)
- Excellent quantitative, analytical, and scientific reasoning skills
- Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities
Who Should Apply
This role suits PhD chemists or computational chemists with active research experience who enjoy explaining complex science clearly and want flexible, remote contract work. It will frustrate anyone who prefers deep focus over context-switching, or who dislikes writing and communication as core parts of their job — this role is as much about articulating domain knowledge as applying it.
Salary Insight
The $45–$90/hr range is wide because it reflects both level variation (early postdocs vs. experienced research scientists) and geographic difference in cost of living. At the top end it's competitive for senior expertise; at the bottom, it undercuts many PhD-level roles. Before applying, research rates for PhD contractors in your subfield and location, and calibrate your expectation — you may want to confirm placement within the range early in conversations.

Application Tip
Lead with a specific research project or system you owned — ideally one that shows both depth in a defined subfield and the ability to teach it. This team is training AI, so they're hiring for people who can articulate *why* a method matters, not just that they used it. A paragraph on how you'd explain your PhD work to a non-chemist will land much harder than a skill checklist. If you have any peer-reviewed work, a patent, or open-source contribution, mention it early.
